A program designed to migrate a MySQL database to an IBM DB2 server was released, aptly named MySQL-to-DB2.
Due to the critical nature of a database for overall operation of a business, migrating a database from one version to another is thought to be one of the biggest challenges faced both by developers, and database administrators. Reasons for this are many and varied, not least of which is the risk of losing valuable data—but there is also downtime to consider, the complexity of the system, and the overall total cost of the project. All these challenges often cause IT managers to avoid the entire project altogether, and they end up making do with their current system for a few years more.
